Laser shaft alignment on rotating shafts of industrial motors
Laser shaft alignment is a maintenance technique used to correct the position of two connected rotating shafts, such as those of a motor and a gearbox, or a pump or compressor.
While alignment was once commonly performed manually using straightedges, calipers and dial indicators, laser technology now provides faster, more precise and fully traceable analysis, allowing data recording and report generation.
Aligning the shafts of industrial motors ensures they are perfectly aligned, reducing vibration, noise and wear, while extending the lifecycle of the machinery.

How laser shaft alignment works
To align two rotating shafts, laser sensors are mounted on the shafts using magnetic or mechanical brackets. The shafts are then slowly rotated to record the initial measurements.
The laser system detects angular and parallel misalignment between the two shafts, displaying values and graphical representation on a screen. To correct the misalignment, shims under the motor feet are adjusted until the correct position is achieved. Once perfect alignment is reached, the system provides real-time confirmation.
The advantages of this system include: alignment precision down to tenths of a millimetre, speed of execution and the generation of detailed reports, useful for certifying the intervention and for future work on the same rotating shafts.
Why aligning industrial machine shafts is important
Laser shaft alignment on rotating shafts of industrial motors is a critical step to avoid unnecessary repairs, saving both time and costs.
This predictive diagnostics technique prevents misalignment issues, reduces vibration and noise, protects mechanical components such as bearings, couplings and gears from wear, and improves efficiency while extending machine lifecycle.
At Electromotor, we provide efficient and high-quality maintenance services with laser shaft alignment of rotating shafts.
