The most common type is the three-phase asynchronous motor with a squirrel cage rotor, accounting for approximately 90% of all electric motors used in industry. Three-phase synchronous motors are less common and are used in applications requiring constant speed, high precision and greater power.

Maintenance of three-phase motors: asynchronous and synchronous models
For three-phase electric motors, maintenance requirements vary slightly depending on whether the motor is asynchronous or synchronous.
For three-phase asynchronous motors, maintenance is relatively minimal and includes periodic bearing lubrication, cleaning to remove dust and contaminants, inspection of windings and vibration analysis.
Three-phase synchronous motors require all the maintenance performed on asynchronous motors, plus additional checks including insulation resistance testing on stator and rotor, verification of the field excitation system and electronic adjustment. Depending on the type, they also require:
-in traditional systems, inspection of the field excitation system, with periodic brush replacement and slip rings maintenance
-in brushless models, inspection of the auxiliary alternator
-in permanent magnet motors, thermal checks and magnet protection
Three-phase motors: the backbone of industry
Three-phase electric motors are the backbone of industry: used in the majority of industrial machinery, they ensure robustness, long-term reliability, low maintenance requirements (especially in asynchronous models) and simple start-up.
They can reach high power levels, up to thousands of kW, making them suitable both for medium-scale machinery such as pumps and compressors, and for large industrial systems such as rolling mills, conveyor systems, rollers, agitators, mixers, extruders and paper mills.
