Rotor balancing

Rotor balancing in industrial electric motors

To prevent vibrations that may cause rotor displacement or, even worse, bearing failure or motor breakdown, rotor balancing is essential.

Using precision equipment such as precision balancing machines or automatic multi-station solutions, the rotor is restored to proper balance by removing material to reduce weight and stabilize rotation, or by adding counterweights in lighter areas.

Rotor balancing is particularly important during electric armature repair, which may generate mass imbalance and consequently lead to vibration, noise and accelerated wear of components.

For rotor balancing and repair services, including after armature rewinding, contact Electromotor. We operate with industries across Italy and Europe.

Which motors require rotor balancing and how it works

All motors with rotating parts, like direct current motors with brushes (or brushless motors) as well as asynchronous motors, three-phase motors, single-phase motors, synchronous motors and generators, all require rotor balancing.

There are two types of balancing: static balancing, which corrects rotor imbalance on a single plane and is used for smaller components, and dynamic balancing, which operates on multiple planes during rotation and is used for high-speed machines and long rotors.

How does rotor balancing work? The rotor is mounted on a dedicated machine that rotates it at controlled speed. Sensors detect where and how much the rotor is unbalanced, generating a graph that identifies excess mass. Based on this data, weight is either added or removed, and the rotor is then tested again to ensure it is perfectly balanced.

Why is balancing important?

An unbalanced rotor generates vibration, noise, stress and other forces that can damage the entire rotating machinery.

Rotor balancing is therefore a critical step in ensuring industrial electric motors remain efficient, reliable and long-lasting, preventing downtime and unexpected malfunctions.

Rely on Electromotor for rotor balancing or any other maintenance and repair service for industrial electric motors.
