Maintenance services for alternators and generators
In general, alternators require relatively simple maintenance. In addition to bearing lubrication, general cleaning and electrical testing, they rarely include brushes and commutators, components typically subject to wear.
Generators, on the other hand (especially direct current motors), feature brushes and commutators that require periodic brush replacement, along with more frequent cleaning including under-cutting and inspection of commutator bars, as well as checks on the internal combustion engine, including oil, filters and fuel.
In summary, alternators require simpler and less frequent maintenance, while generators are more complex and require more regular intervention.
Applications of generators and alternators
Although both convert mechanical energy into electrical power, alternators and generators are used in different applications. Alternators are primarily used for large-scale power generation and distribution, while generators provide power in emergency situations or independent operation when the grid is unavailable.
Alternators are mainly used in power plants – hydroelectric, thermal and wind –to feed energy into the grid, in industry for continuous machinery power supply, and in transport to power ships, trains, aircraft and heavy vehicles.
Generators are widely used in hospitals and data centres as emergency systems to ensure continuity during blackouts, on construction sites, in remote areas or temporary events (fairs, concerts, public events) for power supply, and in domestic applications such as small generators for campers or boats.
